Il Lombardia

Il Lombardia

Il Lombardia is one of cycling’s five Monuments and the great closing classic of the Italian season, first contested in 1905. Known as the “Race of the Falling Leaves,” it crosses the demanding hills and Prealpine landscapes of Lombardy, with Lake Como, the Madonna del Ghisallo and a succession of historic climbs forming some of the most recognisable scenery in professional cycling.

Around the Peloton explores Il Lombardia beyond its famous roads, tracing the sanctuaries, lakeside communities, medieval towns and mountain landscapes encountered between its changing start and finish cities. Few races connect cycling history, religious tradition and the geography of northern Italy so closely, making Lombardia as much a journey through the cultural landscape of the region as one of the sport’s defining one-day races.
